Special educational needs and or disabilities (SEND) covers a wide variety of different needs, conditions, and disabilities – it is not a uniform diagnosis. It is important to recognise the different types of SEND, which is broken down into the 6 categories below. It is also important to recognise that many children and young people in SEND may fall under more than one of these categories:

Vision Support Service (VSS)

Help for children and young people in their childcare setting, school or setting with a vision impairment.
Hearing Support Service (HSS)

Help for children and young people in their childcare setting, school or setting with a hearing impairment.
Physical and Medical Needs Service (PMNS)

Advice, guidance and training to make sure children and young people with physical and medical needs get the right support and same opportunities.
Cognition and Learning

Information, advice, and support for children or young people with a range of learning difficulties.
Communication and Interaction

This area covers speech, language and communications needs and provides information and support for children or young people to help them socialise and be heard.
Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Information, advice, and support for children and young people who may be isolated, anxious, or show difficult behaviours in their learning
