5G RuralDorset was a ground-breaking programme to understand how next generation connectivity could help people live better, safer and more prosperous lives in rural communities, even in environments as sensitive as Dorset’s UNESCO-designated world heritage coastline.
The research and development work funded by Government and industry was split into five main research areas:
Future of Food. 5G connectivity in agriculture and aquaculture to increase productivity and reduce environmental impact
Rural Community Accelerator. 5G mobile services to unlock social and commercial benefits for the area
Connected Coast. Improved public coastal safety through UK and world first communication services for first responder organisations
Innovation Accelerator. Indoor and outdoor 5G connectivity at Dorset Innovation Park to support companies developing innovative products and services
Coastal Cliff Monitoring. 5G connected sensors to monitor land stability and cliff movement along the Jurassic Coast
Results
The Dorset Council-led programme received international coverage and won multiple national awards.
