Road repairs continue

Posted on:

This May and June, our contractors will be carrying out repairs to minor roads in the area that are in the worst structural condition.

The roads have extensive defects including uneven surfaces, sunken areas, potholes and cracking.

The repair process, known as in-situ recycling, reuses the existing road materials to repair the structure of the road.

Households and businesses affected are informed by letter in advance of the works to be carried out by SPL Ltd. The programme includes some weekend working but no working on Bank Holidays. Signs on site will provide the most up to date information.

Due to the size of the machinery used, roads need to be closed for the work. Closures will be from 7am to 7pm. When required, diversions will be in place with signs erected.

In-situ recycling breaks down the existing carriageway to its foundations. Cement and bitumen emulsion are then added to this material to strengthen the structural foundation of the road. Once this is fully compacted, a new surface is added. The excess chippings are swept by a mechanical sweeper and the road then reopened to vehicles.

In-situ has many benefits including reusing material already in place creating minimal waste and producing up to 70 per cent less C02 emissions than conventional resurfacing. However, it does require consistent dry weather to undertake the works.

Approximately one week after the new surface is added, the road will be closed again for a couple of hours so a top coating can be added. This treatment helps to secure the chippings.
