Local music groups in Dorset

There are many ensemble opportunities for beginner musicians in music groups across the county.

Opportunities provided by the Dorset Music Service

Beginner Friendly Groups (BFG)

BFGs are great if you've started to learn an instrument, can play and read just 3 notes and are aged between 7 and 11. These 1 hour sessions consist of group warm ups, rhythmic games and challenges, and of course playing great music together.

Dorset Youth Concert Band

The Dorset Youth Concert Band is for players who are Grade 2 to 5 and are keen to play a wide range of music, including traditional, pop, classical and more!

Join us on a £5 pay as you go basis.

Rehearsals are at The Blandford School on Saturdays at 11.30am.

B Sharp

B Sharp offers creative singing and music making activities, both in and out of school, for early years, children and young people in Lyme Regis and surrounding towns and villages. It's well known for its young music leadership programme that creates personal, social and music progression pathways for all involved.

Boom Box

Boom Box is a weekly jam session at The Hub for young people aged 8 to 11 years to come together after school to play, make new music and make new friends along the way.

These are enjoyable sessions that build musical skills, develop confidence and social skills. All musical tastes and abilities are welcome.

Boom Box is:

  • for 8 to 11 year olds
  • every Thursday
  • at the Hub in Lyme Regis 
  • from 4pm to 5.15pm

Hub Jams

Hub Jams are weekly informal music and jamming sessions for:

  • instrumentalists
  • vocalists
  • technicians

Friendly and professional music leaders will support you to develop your music and there are chances to perform. All musical tastes and abilities are welcome.

Hub Jams are:

  • for 11 to 18 year olds
  • every Tuesday
  • at the Hub in Lyme Regis
  • from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Bridport Jams - B Sharp Voices

Bridport Jams - B Sharp Voices are weekly informal music and singing sessions for vocalists and musicians aged 7 to 19 years old. You don't need to be a musician already, just come along and develop your skills in:

  • songwriting
  • singing
  • instruments
  • performance
  • production

Friendly and professional music leaders will support you to develop your music, whatever music you like. There are also chances to perform. All musical tastes and abilities are welcome.

Bridport Jams are:

  • for 7 to 18 year olds
  • every Monday
  • at Bridport Youth and Community Centre
  • juniors' session (7 to 11 years old) 5.30pm to 6.15pm
  • seniors' session (11 to 18 years old) 6.30pm to 7.30pm

Pop Club

Each week Pop Club members in Dorchester get the chance to engage in a wide variety of musical workshops and perform using a professional sound system under the guidance of music producer Mickey Wills. A fantastic opportunity for young people to discover and experience live music performance. Pop Club also plays live at gigs and festivals throughout the year.

Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus

They are passionate about getting youngsters singing to a high standard. To become a member, you need to be 8 years old or more, enjoy singing, be willing to attend regular rehearsals and take part in their concerts. These include concerts with Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and concerts that they give by themselves.

Modern Drum Academy

Modern Drum Academy is a new drum school located in the centre of Weymouth. Learn drums, guitar, and vocals at your own pace.

Dorchester Area Schools Partnership (DASP) Music Ensembles

Do you play an instrument or sing? Do you love performing? Do you want to make new friends? Then join DASP for weekly music ensembles and tuition in Dorchester. Open to all young people in the local area with no audition. From £25 per term. Groups offered include:

  • Training String Orchestra (grade 0 to 2)
  • Training Windband (Grade 0 to 2)
  • Orchestra (Grade 2/3+)
  • Jazz Band (Grade 2+)
  • Skylarks Choir (Year 3-6)

Christchurch Music Centre

Christchurch Music Centre is an independent centre based in Twynham School in Christchurch. The centre hosts a Junior and a Senior wind band, meeting each Saturday morning throughout the term to rehearse. Players enjoy a challenging selection of music, from big screen to big band, popular favourites to classical greats.

Performance highlights include concerts in the beautiful Christchurch Priory and airside during the Bournemouth Air Festival. Both bands are frequently asked to perform at events across East Dorset, providing musical entertainment for the Christchurch Christmas Festival and relaxing summer afternoons by local bandstands. 

Rehearsals are:

  • Junior Band - 9am to 10am
  • Senior Band - 10.30am to 12.30pm

Coda groups

Coda Wind Ensemble

The Coda Wind Ensemble is for players of all ages and abilities who are warmly welcomed to play in a relaxed, informal setting (as a guideline, a standard of Grade 2 to 5 is recommended). We'll be playing a selection of music from across the orchestral repertoire - some easy bits and some of those slightly more challenging pieces you've always wanted to have a go at!

Ensemble practice is on Saturdays from 12.45pm to 1.45pm

Coda Saturday Rock School

Coda Saturday Rock School is designed for young musicians to work together to develop musical and performance skills.

Rock School is on Saturdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm

Coda Kids Ukelele Band

Coda Kids Ukulele Band for 6 to 11 year olds. This is a perfect progression route for any student who have tried out the ukulele as part of their year 4 first access to music.

Band practice is on Fridays from 4.45pm to 5.45pm.

Coda Beginners Jazz Ensemble

Coda Beginners Jazz Ensemble is mainly aimed at wind players from Grade 2 to 4 to give you the opportunity of playing together as a band. They also welcome rhythm players, such as drums and guitar.

Practice is on Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Funky Little Choir

Funky Little Choir are based in Christchurch and run choirs for all ages from 8 plus. They are an amateur choir with a professional image and sound, who love to sing and feel their choir is very much part of the community.

Rehearse on a Monday:

  • 8-12 year olds 5.30pm to 5:30pm 

  • 13-18 year olds 6.30pm to 8pm

Dynamix Brass

Dynamix brass is a brass band for players from the age of seven in the Bournemouth/Poole area. They pride themselves on giving young people the best opportunities and exposure possible whatever their age. Dynamix have won several first and second prizes at competitions in the last three years and continues regularly in the local music scene. Cost is just £2 per week.

Rehearsals are on Mondays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Aim Central, Kinson Road, Bournemouth BH10 5HD.

Dynamix Children's Choir

Now in it's third year, this award winning children's choir continues to showcase young talent (aged between 6-12 years) from the local area. Dynamic in both music and enthusiasm this experienced team are passionate about musical excellence, in particular the human instrument, 'the voice'. Led by leading vocalist and composer Darren Bartlett the strong line up of highly dedicated professionals are committed to helping your musicians reach their full potential. Music includes musical theatre, Disney songs and classic pop.

Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 5.55pm to 6.40pm at Kinson Methodist Church, 1330 Wimborne Road, Bournemouth BH10 7AW.
