Case Study: David discovers new possibilities, and independence, through digital learning
At 42, David Holmes is looking to rebuild his life and career. Three years ago, he was involved in a serious road traffic accident that left him with a broken back and using a wheelchair. The injuries brought his long career as a lorry driver to an abrupt end, forcing him to rethink his future and what kind of work he could pursue.
Determined to find a new direction, David became interested in IT as a potential career path, but he faced one major barrier: he had very little experience using computers. Wanting to make a fresh start, he enrolled on the Digital Discovery Course for Beginners at the Weymouth Digital Skills Hub.
The course gave David the space to learn at his own pace, covering essential skills such as navigating a computer, managing files, and using the internet confidently. He quickly found that the supportive environment helped him not only build skills but also regain a sense of motivation and purpose.
One of the biggest impacts of the course came at the end, when David received a free refurbished laptop to help him continue learning. As he didn’t own a computer, this made an immediate and profound difference.
He described receiving the laptop as something that would “change his life”, giving him the opportunity to do online banking, apply for work, and study from home.
The course has also helped David take an important step in rebuilding his independence. He shared that attending sessions has encouraged him to get out of the house — something he hasn’t done much over the last few years as he adjusted to life after his accident.
David now feels more hopeful about his future and is exploring how to continue developing his digital skills as he moves toward new career possibilities in IT.
