Library services for visually impaired people

You can borrow talking books, or audio books, free of charge from Dorset libraries if you're blind or partially sighted.

Every library in Dorset has a range of audio book titles in stock, as well as large print books. 

Use our library catalogueto find a list of all audio books available on our library catalogue. You can access the library catalogue computers in the library or wherever you connect to the internet. Ask a library staff member if you need any help.

Books in Braille or Moon

You can request talking books free of charge. We can also borrow books in alternative formats such as Braille or Moon for you from other libraries in the UK.

Guide dogs

Assistance and guide dogs are welcome in all of our libraries. Library staff will be happy to assist or advise you if you require any help in using library services.

RNIB Library

RNIB Library is the largest of its kind in Europe, holding Talking Books, Braille, Giant Print and Music. The entire RNIB library offer (audio and print content) is free to access for people with sight loss or print impairment. Dorset Libraries can help to signpost you to joining the RNIB service and access the online catalogue.

RNIB Newsagent

RNIB Newsagentdelivers more than 200 popular and best-selling publications in a format to suit you. The major daily and weekend papers, the best features, and articles from top-selling magazines including Reader's Digest, BCC History Magazine, BBC Good Food and Which?, Specialist publications such as Flight International, Moneywise and New Scientist.

South West Dorset Talking Newspaper

The South West Dorset Talking Newspaper provides a weekly dose of local news and a talking magazine, free of charge, to people who are either blind or partially sighted.

They serve the areas of:

  • Blandford
  • Bridport
  • Dorchester
  • Lyme Regis
  • Portland
  • Sherborne
  • Weymouth

They have listeners all over Dorset, in neighbouring counties and even further afield. They only supply talking newspapers on memory sticks that can be plugged into your computer. If you do not have a computer, memory stick players can be loaned to you free of charge. 

Reading sight

Reading Sight is a unique free website packed with information about all aspects of providing an accessible library service for blind and partially sighted people. The Accessible Libraries tab and Reading Technologies tab provide lots of information about how libraries are accessible to all.
