Dog warden service in East Dorset
If a dog is picked up as a stray then we will attempt to re-unite the dog with its owner. It is important, therefore, that your dog wears a collar and tag with your name and address on it. This is a legal requirement, as is the requirement for your dog to be micro-chipped.
However, if we are unable to identify or make contact with the owner of the dog we will take it to kennels. The owner will then have to pay a statutory fine, together with any expenses incurred, before they can reclaim their dog.
The statutory fine payable is £45 (£25 statutory payment and £20 administration fee), the daily kennel charge is £13.66 and should the dog be picked up out of normal office hours there may be an additional out of hours charge of £13. If your dog is not micro-chipped the council also has the legal power to carry this out on your behalf and pass this charge onto the owner. The owner will not be able to reclaim their dog until all charges have been paid in full.
If a dog remains unclaimed after seven days they will be passed on to a rescue centre for re-homing.
Please telephone 01202 795185 during office hours or 01202 795000 out of hours, when a dog warden will be on call.
It is an offence not to pick up after your dog has fouled and failure to do so can lead to a fixed penalty.

We receive many complaints about dog fouling each year and the Dog Warden and the Animal Welfare Officer carry out regular patrols to enforce the dog fouling legislation across the district.
We investigate complaints where people have been bitten by dogs or have felt threatened by a dog.

Part of being a responsible dog owner is to ensure that your dog is under your control at all times.
Micro chipping dogs
All dogs picked up by the council as strays, are scanned for a microchip to try and re-unite the dog with its owner. All dog owners are required by law to have their dogs micro-chipped. Failure to comply could result in the issue of a fixed penalty notice.
We can offer a micro chipping service, please contact us for details. Alternatively your local vet should offer this service.
