Test your broadband speed
There are multiple speed checker tools online.
Some examples include:
You may want to test at different times of the day. Speeds can vary throughout the day, especially during peak hours.
For the most accurate results, use an ethernet cable to connect your computer to your router. If you need to test wirelessly, position yourself as close to your router as possible. Make sure that nothing else is using your internet connection or running on your computer while performing the test.
Understanding your results
Your speed test will show:
- download speed: How fast data is received (important for streaming, browsing, downloading)
- upload speed: How fast data is sent (important for video calls, uploading files)
- ping (latency): How quickly your device communicates with the server (important for gaming and video calls)
Speed | Suitable for |
---|---|
10 to 25 Mbps | Basic browsing, email and social media |
25 to 50 Mbps | HD streaming and online gaming (1 to 2 devices) |
50 to 100 Mbps | 4K streaming, large downloads and multiple devices |
100+ Mbps | Smart homes, multiple 4K streams and fast file sharing |
If your speed is consistently below 10 Mbps, you may be eligible to request a better service under the UK’s broadband Universal Service Obligation. Find out more about your right to request a decent broadband service.
Improve your connection
If your results are lower than expected:
- restart your router regularly
- move your router to a central, elevated location
- disconnect unused devices
