Where We Can Call Home

A Talk by Louise Boston-Mammah

About

Join us at Dorset History Centre for a talk by Louise Boston-Mammah, Programme Co-ordinator of DEED, on 'Where We Can Call Home' – a community heritage project telling stories of resilience, resourcefulness and relationships in ethnically diverse communities.

Where We Can Call Home is DEED's latest community heritage project, featuring interviews with over 50 individuals from BCP’s ethnically diverse communities. It explores how people from around the world have come to call Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole home over the past 30 years. From escaping life under communist rule in former Czechoslovakia to pursuing a master’s degree in Journalism at Bournemouth University, each person has a unique and compelling story to tell. But what they all share is the resilience, resourcefulness, and relationships they’ve shown while building their new lives.

Many of those interviewed went on to share their stories through performance and talks as part of a programme of community storytelling events and school workshops.

The full interviews are to be deposited at the Dorset History Centre where they will be preserved and made available long into the future.

“People’s incredible journeys, told beautifully, immerse you in their world, just for a moment. They provoke questions of us, as listeners, about how we can change our communities for the better.” Louise Boston-Mammah, DEED Programme Co-ordinator.

Louise Boston-Mammah is an educator, co-ordinator and advisor running a variety of school and community projects about identity and belonging. She has a life-long passion for Black History. Currently Programme Co-ordinator at DEED, she has led several National Lottery Heritage Fund projects telling the stories of ethnically diverse people who have been living in BCP & Dorset for hundreds of years, helping challenge misconceptions of the rural Dorset idyll.
