What Is a Direct Payment?
Once I was assessed as eligible for support, I asked for a direct payment. It gives me more choice and control over my life.
A direct payment is money from the council for me to choose and pay for my support. Everyone's different. My support needs and goals are unique to me.
Some examples a direct payment could be used for are employing someone to help me, using a care agency, transport costs, purchasing equipment, paying for membership to a group or club, and support for carers.
I opened a separate bank account for the payments to be made into. I was worried about being able to manage the money, so I asked my dad to help. He's my nominating person.
I'm responsible for how I use my direct payment. I keep receipts, invoices, and bank statements for the council to check.
I contribute towards the cost of my direct payment. A financial assessment told me how much. The financial assessment considered my disability-related costs.
I will have a better life. I'm doing the things that are important to me with the support I choose.
