The role will be:
- to assist the Presiding Officer at the polling station on election day
- ensure that all electors are treated fairly and with respect
- to maintain the secrecy and security of the ballot and to be the face of an efficient and democratic election process
General duties
General duties include:
- ensuring that voters are able to cast their vote in secret, free from influence and in a calm atmosphere
- asking for and check voter identification before issuing ballot papers
- ensuring electors understand the new voter identification requirements including what constitutes an acceptable form of ID
- ensuring electors are able to present their ID in private when requested
- complying with any instructions from the Presiding Officer and/or Returning Officer
- attending training sessions provided by the Returning Officer’s Team
- being aware of the electoral regulations as they affect electors at polling stations (notes will be provided)
- assisting with the layout of the polling station and preparation for the opening of the poll
- remaining at the polling station for the duration of the poll and assist the Presiding Officer to open/close the poll on time
- acting impartially at all times
- checking and marking voters’ names in the register of electors
- issuing ballot papers to voters as directed by the Presiding Officer, ensuring that they bear the official mark
- maintaining the secrecy and security of the ballot at all times
- keeping the polling station tidy
- ensuring that all signs and notices are clear, visible and remain in place throughout the day
- answering voters’ questions, where appropriate, in a friendly and professional way
- being responsible for health and safety at the station for yourself and others
You cannot be employed if you have carried out any duties on behalf of any political party or candidate at the election

Skills and attributes
Experience
- must be 18 or over and eligible to work in the UK
- excellent communication and customer care skills
- punctual and dependable
- good administration skills
- be prepared to attend training and/or briefing sessions as required
- able to travel to your polling station at the required times
- no formalised affiliation or active participation with any political group at election time
- self-motivated and of presentable appearance
- acceptance of waiving of Working Time Directive for period of employment
- skills and attributes
Desirable
- knowledge of the area
- health and safety knowledge (but training will be given)
- previous experience of election duty
- ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
