Engaging local residents, schools, community groups and other stakeholders is a fundamental part of a successful public art project. When the community is not genuinely involved, projects can miss important stories and leave people feeling unrepresented. Conversely, intentional, inclusive engagement can strengthen connections, enrich the artwork’s meaning and help the work become a valued part of place and identity.

How to engage well
- Engage with the community early in the process to help define the vision and objectives for the artwork, not just later when design choices are fixed.
- Use participatory methods such as fun workshops, walking tours and story‑gathering. These sessions can help uncover local context, memories, needs, and aspirations.
- Actively reach out to diverse groups (age, background, disability, ethnicity) so the engagement does not only reflect the loudest voices.
- Show participants how their input influenced the design or process, and keep them updated as the project progresses.
- Involve the community at launch and in the lifespan of the work (maintenance, interpretation, events) so the artwork becomes more than a one‑off installation.
Case Study: Consequences
The project Consequences, delivered by Activate Performing Arts in partnership with Radical Ritual, is a great example of public art being co-produced by community members. The project asked local community groups to explore myths, rituals and the landscape of Dorset through workshops, walks and creative sessions. These were then transformed into a large‑scale outdoor art piece, the Consequences Giant.
