Construction work to enhance active travel and improve pedestrian safety on Fairfield Road, Dorchester, was completed in 2024.
The new footway and pedestrianised eastern end has transformed travel for pedestrians moving around the town, particularly between the train stations and for people walking from the car park to Brewery Square, by providing a safe route between many town centre amenities.
Working with Dorchester Town Council, additional improvements for the pedestrianised eastern end have now been designed to enhance the public realm.
Enhancements centre around urban drainage features to help deal with long-standing water run-off issues from the car park while creating a town centre rain garden.
Features include planting beds for native species of shrubs, plants and trees, seating areas and cycle parking.
For construction to take place, it will be necessary to temporarily close the pedestrianised area of Fairfield Road.
Work is scheduled to start on Monday 28 September and will last around nine weeks.
Access to the car park will be via the pedestrian entrances at Copper Street or from Weymouth Avenue into the covered car park area.
