Our team supports young people aged 16 to 18 (up to the September after they are 18) who live in Dorset and who are not in employment, education or training (NEET).

We help them:

  • into further education
  • to find employment
  • to seek further training
  • reengage with education

Depending on their circumstances, we also offer direct support to the following groups of young people who are most in need:

  • Children in Care and Care Leavers aged 16 to 21
  • young people aged 16 to 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

We are also required to contact young people in the groups above and collect information about them. We confirm whether they are in education, employment or training, or whether they need further support from us.

Partners

We work with our partners to identify and engage with young people who have not continued their education or started work.

Our partners include:

  • schools
  • colleges
  • other education providers
  • our locality teams

We support young people through mentoring and by building relationships.

We will build on their:

  • strengths
  • capabilities
  • personal resilience

We may also work with the young person’s family to support them.

School and college responsibilities

Schools and colleges are responsible for providing independent careers advice and guidance for all young people in years 8 to 13. They receive support through the Careers and Enterprise Company with Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

For young people with SEND who wish to stay in education, schools and colleges will support the transition to employment.

For young people with an EHCP, schools and colleges can help set goals and support for:

  • moving into paid employment and higher education
  • independent living
  • having friends and relationships and being part of the community
  • being as healthy as possible
