Dorset's climate is changing. How we respond matters.

Climate change affects local places, services and landscapes. The choices we make now will impact how Dorset copes with future challenges.

Organisations across the county are working together on a shared plan for long-term resilience. It will help us understand climate risks and coordinate action.

This work builds on the recommendations of the Dorset Citizens’ Climate Panel.

What is climate adaptation?

This is about preparing for change so that people, nature and the economy can thrive.

Adaptation can include:

  • designing places to cope with hotter temperatures
  • improving flood resilience
  • protecting water supplies during drought
  • managing risks from coastal erosion and sea level rise
  • creating resilient habitats and green spaces
  • helping businesses and services prepare for extreme weather

Adaptation is not separate from climate action. Alongside reducing emissions, it helps communities and organisations become more resilient to change.

Why Dorset needs to adapt

The county's location, important habitats and ageing population mean climate risks could have serious consequences. Climate change also presents opportunities, but only if we identify and plan for them.

Developing a plan for Dorset

We’re working with businesses and community groups to develop the Dorset Climate Adaptation Strategy.

This plan will:

  • build a shared understanding of Dorset's climate risks and opportunities
  • identify priorities for action
  • support organisations and communities to become more resilient
  • encourage collaboration across sectors
  • help attract investment and funding for adaptation activity
  • provide a framework for coordinated action across Dorset

Who is involved?

To make sure the plan reflects local knowledge and experience, we are involving a range of partners.

These include:

  • local authorities
  • emergency services
  • health organisations
  • businesses and employers
  • infrastructure providers
  • environmental organisations
  • community and voluntary groups
  • education and research institutions

What you can do

We all have a role in building resilience to climate change. There will be opportunities to contribute through workshops, activities and consultations. To get involved, or to find out more about the project, email our climate team at [email protected].
