The role will be:

  • to assist the Returning Officer in the verification/counting of ballot papers after the close of poll
  • to ensure that the votes are counted fairly, efficiently and accurately

General duties

General duties include:

  • attending briefings provided by Returning Officer’s team (usually held before the start of the counting process)
  • assisting with the verification/counting of votes on the evening of the poll
  • ensuring that the proper procedure for sorting and counting of votes is followed, as per instructions
  • working as a member of a team according to instructions issued on the day by your Supervisor
  • during the counting of votes, drawing the Team Supervisor’s attention to any doubtful papers as instructed
  • being responsible for the health and safety of yourself and others
  • remaining at the count centre until all votes are counted
  • acting impartially at all times

  • must be 18 or over and eligible to work in the UK
  • ability to work as part of a team
  • punctual and dependable
  • basic numeracy skills
  • attention to detail
  • ability to work under pressure
  • no formalised affiliation or active participation with any political group at election time
  • of presentable appearance
  • able to travel to the count venue at the required times
