We want to improve the junction between Abbotsbury Road and B3514 Chickerell Road by reducing the size of the junction bell-mouth and identifying a location for:

  • a signalled crossing
  • a parallel crossing

This is to improve safety for pedestrians, particularly school children when crossing.

Project aims

The project includes:

  • a new signalled puffin crossing on Chickerell Road, giving people a safer place to cross
  • a new zebra crossing and cycle crossing on Abbotsbury Road so pedestrians and cyclists can cross more safely
  • new dropped kerbs on Chickerell Road, providing new uncontrolled crossings to make it easier for people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, pushchairs and bikes
  • a safer pedestrian crossing point at the entrance to Compass School
  • changes to the road layout to help slow traffic and improve safety at the junction
  • a tighter corner to slow vehicle speeds, complemented by a new grassed area and seating

See the Improvement design for Abbotsbury Road /Chickerell Road Junction.

These improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility for all road users by:

  • reducing vehicle speeds
  • improving crossing opportunities
  • creating a more attractive environment for walking, wheeling and cycling

The scheme will also strengthen connections to local schools, providing safer and more convenient routes for pupils, parents and carers, particularly those travelling to and from Budmouth Academy.

What happens next

Construction is due to start on 7 September 2026 and is expected to last approximately 12 weeks with a completion date by Friday 27 November 2026.

Temporary two-way traffic signals will be used on Chickerell Road during this period to maintain safe access through the area.

A localised signed diversion will be in place during the closure.
