As part of our ongoing traffic signal refurbishment programme, the two-way shuttle signals in Lewell, near Dorchester, are being replaced.

The signals manage alternate flow traffic under Lewell Railway Bridge at the eastern end of the West Stafford Bypass, but the equipment now needs to be brought up to modern standards and latest technology.

Maintenance bays are being installed as part of the work to ensure safe working for future maintenance of the equipment. Hard-standing is also being installed around the signal controller, chambers and poles to ensure these remain accessible to our engineers.

Work will start on Monday 11 March and will finish by Friday 3 May.

During this time, temporary two-way signals will manage traffic under the bridge. Although this replicates the current set-up, temporary signals are not as efficient as permanent signals so please allow a little extra time for your journey.

We will also be making use of the daytime road closure booked by resurfacing colleagues.
