Entries are graded in the same way as listed buildings. Unlike listed buildings, there is no provision for statutory protection, partly due to the organic and changeable nature of gardens. The National Planning Policy Framework instructs that substantial loss or harm to a grade II park or garden should be exceptional, and to grade I and II* wholly exceptional.

All development proposals relating to Grade I and II* gardens must be referred to Historic England.

The former Purbeck District Council has 5 entries on the register:

  • Charborough Park II*

  • Creech Grange II*

  • Durlston Castle II

  • Encombe II*

  • Lulworth Castle II
