Employment completions

Core Strategy Policy KS5 sets a target of 80 hectares of employment land (B1, B2 and B8) to be identified to meet requirements to 2013 - 2028. Tables 1-12 below show net completions of employment floorspace and net gains in employment land completed, for each monitoring year. Table 13 shows the amount of available employment land as at October 2016. Table 14 shows progress on core strategy employment site allocations 1 April 2012 - 31 March 2018.

Bournemouth Airport

Policy BA1 sets out a vision for Bournemouth airport. Core Strategy policy BA2 sets out the strategy for the operational airport and includes a target for projected growth to 3 million passengers per annum by 2030. The tables below show the latest passenger figures and progress on implementation of the Airport Area Wide Travel Plan.

Progress to facilitate sustainable access to the airport and its business parks: policy
LTP3 Improvements highlighted in airport travel plan

The Airport Travel Plan is currently out of date. The Airport has started preliminary work on updating its Travel Plan/Surface Access Strategy; and is working with Bournemouth Borough Council/the Business Travel Network to undertake a Travel Survey. Discussions are underway to promote a program of activity over the summer promoting cycling. The Airport is promoting the wider “Dorset Wider Commuter Challenge” among its employees.

LTP H-1 enhancing bus services to the airport

In January 2017, as part of the major network change by Yellow Buses, the route of the bus to the Airport was changed to B1, and fully integrated into the operators overall network. From 26 May 2018, the Bus Service to Bournemouth International Airport and the Aviation Business Park was revised and re-branded ‘Jetbus 737’. The number of timetabled departures was significantly reduced from 14 daily, 7 day a week, departures to the airport and 13 daily trips back from the Airport to Bournemouth, previously; to 6 return trips Monday to Friday, 3 on Saturdays and 2 on Sundays and Public Holidays. The change was made as the former,  more frequent timetable, was not financially sustainable, based on the passenger numbers using the service. The routing remains from Bournemouth centre, Station, Winton and Moordown. Travel to/from the Airport and Business Park is included in the 'Getting About' Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch area smartcard day ticket as a result of liaison between Yellow Buses, the Airport and the Local Authorities.

LTP E-1 enhancing safe walking and cycling routes

Following an unsuccessful bid to the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership for Growth Deal 3 funding; DCC submitted a bid for NPIF (National Productivity Investment Fund) for the B3073 corridor. NPIF bid was unsuccessful, but DCC continue to work with Bournemouth Borough Council to provide and explore cycle/walking links to the Airport and Aviation Park and deliver cycle links on the B3073 from Wimborne to Christchurch through the BIG programme.

LTP E-6 safe and secure cycle storage facilities

The airport has some cycle storage for their employees. The onus is on other employers at the airport to provide cycle storage to meet their own needs. They can get support from the Business Travel Network Capital Grants Scheme. The Airport assists the Business Travel Network to promote this scheme.

LTP F-1 more sustainable travel patterns and modal shift to low carbon modes

As mentioned above, in LTP E-1 , the NPIF bid submitted to improve cycle/walking links to the airport ,was unsuccessful. DCC continue to work with Bournemouth Borough Council to provide and explore cycle/walking links to the Airport and Aviation Park and deliver cycle links on the B3073 from Wimborne to Christchurch through the BIG programme; and to provide electric vehicle charging points.

Table last updated March 2019

Progress on development of infrastructure to support operational development of the airport (Policy BA2)

The terminal buildings were completed in 2011 and there have been no further developments of infrastructure as of November 2017.

Bournemouth Airport Northern Business Parks

The local plan allocates land on the airport northern business parks primarily for employment uses (B1, B2, and B8). Over the Core Strategy plan period 2013-2028 it is envisaged that 30 ha of new employment land may come forward across the north west and north east business parks (policy KS5).
