Unpaid carers across Dorset are being encouraged to join a growing network of free peer support groups, offering a welcoming space to meet others who understand the realities of caring.

The groups are run through the Dorset Carer Service, delivered by Help & Care. They provide informal opportunities for unpaid carers to share experiences, access information, and build friendships with people who have similar lived experiences.

Support groups by Help & Care are currently available in Blandford, Bridport, Gillingham, Lyme Regis, Shaftesbury, Sherborne and Wareham, helping carers access local support and reduce feelings of isolation. The sessions are free to attend and open to all unpaid carers, regardless of the circumstances of the person they care for and those who are recently bereaved.

The groups are designed to be informal and relaxed. Rather than following a set programme, they give carers the chance to talk, listen, share practical advice and spend time with others who understand the challenges and rewards that caring can bring.  Occasionally guest speakers are invited or group activities are undertaken.

In the first three months of this year, 195 carers attended one of the monthly support sessions across the county, highlighting the value many people place on connecting with others in a similar situation.

Steve Robinson, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said:

"Unpaid carers make an enormous contribution to the lives of their family members, friends and neighbours every day. Caring can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging and sometimes isolating.

"These peer support groups offer a simple but valuable opportunity to meet people who understand what you're going through, share experiences and learn about support that may be available. I'd encourage anyone who provides unpaid care to find out more and see whether a local group could help them."

Des Persse, Help & Care’s Director of Services, said:

“Peer support groups play a vital role in helping carers feel connected, understood and less alone. Help & Care, in collaboration with community groups and partner organisations, are committed to strengthening community capacity by creating opportunities for carers to support one another, share experiences and build lasting local networks.”

Help &Care is also exploring opportunities to offer additional activities and experiences for carers in the future through partnership working, helping people build social connections and access further support.
