Remembering Srebrenica; “Remember Yesterday, Act Today”

On 11th July 2025, the Srebrenica Flag will be flown over County Hall in solemn remembrance of the more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys who were systematically murdered during the Srebrenica genocide in Eastern Bosnia. This year marks the 30th anniversary of that atrocity, which the United Nations has described as the worst on European soil since the Second World War.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Remember Yesterday, Act Today.” It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring importance of confronting hatred and intolerance wherever they arise.
The lessons of Srebrenica are stark: When hatred and division go unchallenged, the consequences can be catastrophic. We must never forget the tragic events of July 1995, and we must remain steadfast in our commitment to challenging hatred, intolerance, prejudice, and discrimination in all its forms.
Remembering Srebrenica, the UK charity leading the commemoration, urges us to honour the memory of the victims and support the survivors by taking action today. Their mission is not only to remember the past but to build a better, more inclusive future—free from hatred and racism, both abroad and here in the UK.
Chair of Dorset Council, Cllr Stella Jones MBE, said: “While Dorset is often seen as a rural idyll, we recognise that within our communities are people of many races and cultures, some of whom still face barriers and exclusion. Dorset Council is committed to ensuring that our county is a place where everyone feels welcome, valued, and included.
Let us remember the victims of Srebrenica, support those who continue to live with the pain of loss, and reaffirm our shared responsibility to build a society rooted in peace, respect, and unity.
