Protecting children from harm: #LookCloser Campaign to tackle exploitation

Dorset Council’s Youth Work Teams are proud to support The Children’s Society’s #LookCloser campaign, a national initiative aimed at raising awareness of child exploitation and encouraging the public to take an active role in safeguarding young people.
This summer, they will be out in communities across Dorset to engage with young people about issues affecting them and offer support where needed. Local businesses and residents will also be approached to help highlight signs of child exploitation.
The teams work closely with other safeguarding partners such as the police and community safety teams, to build a network of protection around children and young people.
Councillor Clare Sutton, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said, "We’re committed to making Dorset the best place for children and young people to grow up.
The #LookCloser campaign urges everyone to be vigilant in spotting signs of child exploitation in public spaces and online.
“Bus and train stations, fast food outlets, hotels and roadside services can be where young victims of child exploitation are most visible.
“By learning to spot the signs and how to report them, we can all help to keep more children safe from abuse.”
Exploitation can take many forms – including criminal, sexual, and online abuse – and often goes unnoticed.
Parents, carers, and community members are encouraged to:
- Be curious and caring about where young people spend their time – both offline and online.
- Talk to young people about their friendships and activities.
- Report any concerns, no matter how small they may seem.
