New speed limit for parts of Ferndown and West Parley
The speed limit along New Road and Christchurch Road in Ferndown and West Parley will be reduced from 40mph to 30mph this summer.
Signage works will start on Monday 13 July, with the 30mph speed limit coming into effect on Friday 17 July 2026.
Residents, the town/parish councils and Dorset Council councillors voiced strong support for the speed limit reductions.
Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said: “The new speed limit represents a significant step forward in enhancing road safety in the area, and I thank everyone who took part in our consultation.
“The aim is to make the area safer for all, whether crossing the road, walking or cycling. Please take extra care as the changes are introduced.
“This change is part of our wider plan to improve New Road, including better crossings and junctions, and I thank everyone for your continued patience and support.”
As some of the current signs are illuminated, they will be disconnected and removed by an electrical contractor. In some cases, the poles will remain in place for a few weeks until the contractor can remove them.
Advisory signs highlighting the reduced speed limit will be in place for six weeks after 17 July.
The lower speed limit is being introduced ahead of work planned for 2027 at the northern section of New Road. This will include improved pedestrian crossing points and minor junction alterations at Dudsbury Avenue and Chander Close. This work will take place alongside other road maintenance work to minimise disruption.
