New interim West Bay Harbour wall repair works set to begin

Dorset Council is set to continue its essential repair works at West Bay Harbour in Bridport this week, following earlier emergency stabilisation efforts on Wall B. The first phase of repairs, completed ahead of schedule in March 2024, involved installing 35 metres of steel sheet piling to prevent further deterioration.
Now, the next phase of works is set to begin. The current scaffolding will be changed to a working platform, followed by concrete repairs. There will be a further change to the scaffolding later in June to allow contractors to carry out interim works to further stabilise the wall (called geopolymer injection) requiring a different working height. The scaffolding should be put back to its current configuration in time for the summer season.
Dorset Council assures residents and visitors that access to local businesses will not be affected during these works. Shops, cafés, and other establishments in the area will remain open as usual, ensuring minimal disruption to the community and tourism.
The geopolymer injection process is a method used to strengthen and stabilise materials - like damaged concrete - by injecting a special mixture, usually made from industrial waste materials and an alkaline activator. Imagine it like filling gaps in a sponge with a strong glue that hardens over time. This technique is widely used for infrastructure projects due to its speed, efficiency, and minimal disruption.
While these upcoming repairs are critical interim measures, Dorset Council has confirmed that major works to provide a permanent solution for the harbour wall will begin in October 2025. This final phase will focus on long-term structural reinforcement, ensuring the harbour wall remains secure and resilient for years to come. Further details will be provided closer to the start date.
Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said:
"These repairs are vital to ensuring the long-term stability of West Bay Harbour, a key part of our coastal infrastructure. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of local businesses and residents as we carry out these essential works. Our priority is to complete them efficiently while minimising disruption, and we are grateful for the continued support of the community."
