Young adults who have support needs and aged between 18 and 25, are opening the door to the next chapter in their lives, following the official launch of a new Supported Living scheme.
The scheme, which is the second of its kind in the Dorset Council area, is designed to give young adults with mild to moderate support needs the opportunity and space to build life skills, which will then enable them to move on to independent living.
Representatives from Dorset Council; housing provider, Advance Housing; and adult social care provider, Care Dorset, officially opened the renovated property in Littlemoor Road, Weymouth, with a ribbon-cutting event.
Cllr Steve Robinson, portfolio holder for Adult Social Care, said: “We are delighted to bring forward a second scheme, following the success of the Supported Living service at Dorchester Road, also in Weymouth.
“We are pleased the experienced staff from Care Dorset will be supporting young people to develop their own skills and interests and encouraging young people to become a part of their local community, whilst learning to become more independent.”
The three-bed fully furnished property in Littlemoor Road is a Transitional property - which means occupants have a licence agreement with the housing provider, Advance Housing - so they can easily move on to a permanent home when they are ready.
The property has kitchen and living room communal areas and every bedroom has a bathroom/shower room.
Care Dorset will be onsite 24/7, so individuals can access support at any time.
Care Dorset's Chair, Caroline Tapster, said: “The success of our first home has taught us so much, and we’re so glad to be putting that to good use with a second.
“It’s a hugely exciting project, and we can’t wait welcome the first group of young people.
”Experienced Care Dorset staff will support the young people to develop a range of life skills, including financial management, washing, cleaning and cooking at the property in Littlemoor Road, Weymouth and support them to be a part of their local community.”
Graeme Jackson, Head of Investment and Development at Advance, added: “Littlemoor Road will support customers to take positive steps towards greater independence and we're proud to be working alongside Dorset Council and Care Dorset to make that happen.
“This scheme will provide young people with a safe, supportive home where they can learn practical life skills, become active members of the local community and prepare for the next stage of their lives. We've already seen the positive impact this type of accommodation can have through our first scheme in Weymouth and we're proud to be creating more opportunities for young people to thrive.”
Dorset Council was involved from the early stages of the project to help identify a suitable property and ensure it met the needs of the young people who will be living there. The council works closely with Advance Housing and Care Dorset to nominate residents and support a smooth transition into the scheme.
Individuals are moving into the property over the summer.
