More than just words: Dorset Council delivers on Extended Access service at Sherborne Library
Dorset Council has officially launched Extended Access at Sherborne Library - giving residents greater flexibility to use library services beyond traditional staffed hours.
Library users can now borrow and return books, use free Wi-Fi and computers and hire rooms for community activities from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday — even when staff are not present.
The library will continue to offer 30 staffed hours each week, ensuring support remains available for those who need it.
Cllr Ben Wilson, portfolio holder for Transformation, Customer and Workforce at Dorset Council said: “This innovative system is a great addition to the library service we offer at Sherborne Library.
“We have already seen positive differences Extended Access has made to residents in other parts of Dorset, and I am pleased we can help more people make use of library facilities around work, education and family commitments.
"Libraries play an important role in our communities - and this investment helps more people benefit from everything Sherborne Library has to offer at a time that works for them."
Sherborne Library is the fourth library in Dorset to offer Extended Access, following the successful introduction of the scheme to Gillingham, Sturminster Newton and Verwood libraries, following investment from Arts Council England.
Any library member aged 16 or over can upgrade to Extended Access membership, which will allow them to enter the library using their library card outside normal opening hours and use services independently.
Funding from Arts Council England has helped Dorset Council deliver wider its commitment to modernise library services, which includes Extended Access, and in turn increase opportunities for local communities to make the most of their local library spaces.
