Local events support ageing well
People across Dorset have been celebrating Age Without Limits Day (10 June 2026), with events helping residents stay connected, active and supported while promoting positive attitudes to ageing.
Age Without Limits Day is a national campaign led by the Centre for Ageing Better. It inspires communities to celebrate ageing and support people of all ages to live well, feel valued and take part in everyday life.
This year’s theme encourages people to ask simple questions about ageing and reflect on how we talk about it, helping to challenge ageism.
We have been involved in a number of the events, funded by the Centre for Ageing Better. Led by community groups, the events have been bringing people together, aiming to reduce loneliness and promote positive views of ageing.
We became an age-friendly community in October 2025. We work with local communities and partners to make Dorset a place where older residents can stay active, take part in local life and continue to make a difference.
A growing network of age-friendly ambassadors is helping to lead this work with volunteers of all ages encouraging inclusive spaces, challenging stereotypes and supporting activities in their communities.
Local events
In Weymouth and Portland, a community open day brought together people of all ages. We supported the event alongside the Veterans Hub, Weymouth and Portland CIC, the YOU Trust and First Point. Visitors could get advice on housing, health and community support from First Point, and enjoy a barbecue and live music. They could also take part in cycling sessions organised by Cycling Without Age; gardening; chess; reiki; and knit and natter.
In Dorchester, a Nature Buddies Network conference at Kingston Maurward College brought together healthcare professionals, community organisations and volunteers. Nature Buddies is a scheme that supports people to improve their health and wellbeing by spend time outdoors with trained volunteers.
In Bridport, the Nature Buzz and Ripple Workshop will take place later this week at the Community Orchard. The wellbeing morning offers older people, their families and carers a chance to relax, be creative, connect with others and spend time in nature. Activities include arts and crafts, refreshments and a calming experience inside the Hum Hut where they can hear the gentle sound of the bee colony below.
Cllr Matt Bell, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Prevention & Communities, said:
"We want Dorset to be a place where everyone can live well as they age, staying active in supportive communities where they can remain independent and connected for longer.
“It is great to see events that give the opportunity for inter-generational activities,” he added.
