Libraries celebrate wellbeing, community and storytelling with award-winning author event
Libraries play a vital role in helping people connect, access wellbeing support and feel part of a welcoming community. As spaces that celebrate local history and the stories that shape us, libraries continue to bring people together through culture, creativity and shared experiences.
On 28 May, 2:30pm to 4pm, Weymouth Library will host a special literary event featuring Wainwright Prize–winning author Michael Malay, inviting the public to explore the power of words, nature and storytelling.
The afternoon begins with a Creative Writing Workshop, where Michael Malay will lead participants through dynamic, hands-on writing exercises inspired by simple natural objects. Designed to help writers of all levels explore how language comes alive, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to experiment with creative expression in an inspiring and supportive setting.
Later in the day, Michael will take part in a Meet the Author event, discussing his novel Late Light and his acclaimed writing on themes of nature, belonging and migration. Attendees will gain insights into his creative process and the ideas that shape his work.
People are welcome to attend the writing workshop, the author talk, or both events.
Booking is essential for all sessions. Tickets are Pay What You Can, with a suggested donation of £5. Free tickets are available, and everyone is welcome.
Full details and booking information can be found via TicketSource.
Cllr. Ben Wilson, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Transformation, Customer & Workforce, said:
“Libraries are about more than books - they’re places where people feel welcome, try something new and connect with others. Events like this bring together creativity, nature and storytelling in a way that’s open to everyone, whether you’re an experienced writer or just curious to give it a go. It’s great to see our Library Service hosting inspiring authors and offering opportunities for people to take part, learn, and enjoy something different in their community.”
There are lots of other exciting events happening across our libraries. Check out What's on in Dorset libraries for more details.
