An independent review has praised Dorset Council's ambition, leadership and strong partnerships, while highlighting the need to focus on the work that will make the biggest difference to residents and ensure the council remains financially sustainable for the future.

A team of experienced councillors and senior officers from councils across the country recently spent four days in Dorset speaking with councillors, staff, partners and community representatives as part of the Local Government Association’s Corporate Peer Challenge.

Initial feedback highlighted a council with committed leadership, a dedicated workforce and a strong focus on improving outcomes for residents. Reviewers also recognised strengths in children's services, adult social care and partnership working across Dorset.

Alongside these strengths, the review identified opportunities for Dorset Council to build on the progress it has made since becoming a unitary authority.

Early feedback suggests the final report will focus on helping the council prioritise its efforts, strengthen accountability and ensure resources are focused on delivering the greatest impact for residents. Reviewers also highlighted the importance of long-term financial sustainability, workforce development, making the best use of technology and data, and continuing to strengthen Dorset's role in supporting economic growth and regional opportunities.

Councillor Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council, said:

"We're encouraged by the positive feedback from the Peer Team, particularly their recognition of the ambition we have for Dorset, the commitment of our workforce and the strength of our partnerships.

"The review recognises that we've made significant progress since local government reorganisation, but it also provides valuable challenge about where we need to focus our efforts next.

"The message from peers is not that we need to do more, but that we need to be clearer about our priorities and focus our energy on the areas where we can have the greatest impact for residents.

"We welcome that challenge. The feedback will help us build on our strengths, focus our efforts and continue improving the services residents rely on every day."

We are currently awaiting the final report from the LGA, which is expected to be published in December. Dorset Council will then develop a response and action plan, which will be considered through the Council’s public committee process early in the new year.
