Residents, visitors and businesses are invited to experience the future of electric car driving at Go Electric! Weymouth, a free event taking place later this month.

Held at Weymouth Esplanade on Saturday 16 May, from 11am to 3pm, the event gives people the chance to see electric cars up close, ask questions and even get behind the wheel themselves.

With fuel and running costs a growing concern for many households, Go Electric! Weymouth will show how electric vehicles can be cheaper to run, easier to charge than many people expect, and practical for everyday life.

The event comes as Dorset Council continues work to expand on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging across the county, helping make electric driving more accessible – particularly for residents without off-street parking.

Visitors to Go Electric! Weymouth will be able to see what the new chargepoints look like and learn more about how and where they will be introduced.

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Place Services, said: “Go Electric! Weymouth is a great opportunity for people to see electric cars in action and get clear, honest information about what owning one is really like.

“For many people, questions about cost, charging and practicality are what hold them back. Events like this help turn new technology into something accessible, relevant and realistic for everyday life – especially as we continue to improve local charging options.”

Go Electric! Weymouth is designed for anyone who is curious, unsure or actively considering making the switch to an electric car. On the day, visitors will be able to:

  • View a range of electric cars to suit different budgets and lifestyles

  • Book a test drive or accompanied drive

  • Speak directly to EV experts, local dealers and EV drivers

  • Get clear, jargon-free advice on charging, range, costs and ownership

Experts from the Energy Saving Trust will be on hand to answer questions on EV ownership, including batteries, running costs and day-to-day charging.

Representatives from Dorset Council’s EV team and delivery partner Connected Kerb will also be available to will show visitors what the new chargepoints will look like and advise them where and when they will be installed.

Go Electric! Weymouth will take place alongside Weymouth Town Council’s free Community Expo on the seafront, which showcases the work of local voluntary and community groups.

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, said: “If you’re heading into Weymouth on Saturday 16th May, visit the Go Electric! event on The Esplanade which takes place alongside our free Community Expo at the Jubilee Clock.

“You can view a variety of electric vehicles, book a test drive, find out more about on-street charging plans and learn about all things EV at Dorset Council’s Go Electric! event.”

Go Electric! Weymouth is delivered in partnership with Dorset Council, Let’s Experience Electric, Connected Kerb and the Energy Saving Trust.
