Dorset to recognise NHS, social care and frontline workers with flag‑raising ceremony
Dorset Council will hold an NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day Flag Raising Ceremony at 10am on Friday 3 July 2026 at the Memorial outside County Hall in Dorchester, led by the Chair of Council, Cllr Stella Jones MBE.
5 July 1948 was an historic moment in our country’s history. It was the day our pioneering National Health Service (NHS) was born, bringing free healthcare to everyone.
The NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day Flag will be raised during the ceremony to show our gratitude to all NHS and frontline staff who worked so tirelessly during the Covid-19 pandemic, and continue to do so on a daily basis. A one-minute silence will be held to remember those who lost their lives during this challenging time.
The Chair of Dorset Council, Cllr Stella Jones MBE, said:
“Over the decades, the NHS has faced crisis, economic downturns, periods of prosperity, extraordinary pressure, and so much more. However, the last few years have brought a new respect and affection for the NHS and the people who work within it. We relied upon them to look after us during those terrible times - to keep us safe - and they have not let us down.
“Let us also not forget the tens of thousands of care home and social workers and covid support group volunteers who have given their skills and service – often putting their own health on the line to keep safe those who are vulnerable, both elderly and young.
“We too remember the many critical frontline workers who tirelessly carried on serving the nation through those dreadful times; transporting our residents, keeping our businesses open, our shops stocked, our streets safe, and our essential services running. And continue to do so each and every day.
“On this NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day, we express our deepest gratitude. We acknowledge the sacrifices you have made, the personal risks you have taken, and the unwavering dedication you have shown. Your commitment to caring for others, often at the expense of your own well-being, is truly inspiring.”
Attending from various sectors are representatives from the NHS, Care Dorset, Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, Damory Bus and Coach, Dorset Police, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, Swanage Lifeboat, Verwood Covid Community Group and officers from Dorset Council Children’s Services and Adult Social Care. Dignitaries include His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s representative, the High Sheriff of Dorset, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Chair, accompanied by HM Lord-Lieutenant’s representative and the High Sheriff of Dorset, will plant flowering plants around the Memorial Panels in honour of those who lost their lives during the pandemic, representing resilience in the face of adversity and serving as a lasting symbol of remembrance and hope. The larger NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day Flag will also be flown over County Hall to mark this day.
Members of the public are welcome to attend. Note that the ceremony is on Friday 3 July, while the national NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day takes place on Sunday (5 July).
