Dorset renters asked about their understanding of new tenant rights

Do you rent your home? Tell us what you know about changes to renting laws.

Tenants who rent from private landlords in Dorset are being asked to respond to a survey to help us understand what they know about the Renters’ Rights Act.

The responses, which will be kept anonymous, will help us improve the information and support we provide to private renters.

The short survey, which takes between 2 to 3 minutes to complete, asks for information about the type of housing people are renting and gauges understanding of the rights provided by the Act, which is set to provide more stability and security for tenants.

It also provides several statements about the Renters’ Rights Act to which respondents are asked whether they think are true or false.

And the survey asks whether renters know what to do if they believe landlords are breaking the new legislation, as well as asking what additional support the council can provide.

Cllr Gill Taylor, Dorset Council's Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness said it was important that renters were aware of the additional rights available to them through the Act.

“The Renters’ Rights Act introduces significant changes to the private rented sector in Dorset, boosting tenant rights and providing clearer rules for rent increases, eviction process and repairs.

“We hope the survey will help renters become more aware of their new rights, including the ability to challenge excessive rent rises and the requirement for landlords to provide a reason for eviction. It will also provide information about how we can improve our advice and guidance.”

The short survey should take around 2 to 3 minutes to complete, and responses are anonymous and will only be used for research and service improvement purposes. Details will be kept in accordance with our data protection policy.
