Dorset Council to mark Merchant Navy Day with flag raising ceremony

Dorset Council will mark Merchant Navy Day with a Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday 3 September at 9.30am at the Memorial outside County Hall, Dorchester. The service will be led by Reverend John Yarrien, Superintendent Minister of the Dorset South and West Methodist Circuit. 

The ceremony will begin with an opening prayer by Reverend John Yarrien, Superintendent Minister of the Dorset South and West Methodist Circuit, followed by a welcome address from Councillor Stella Jones MBE, Chair of Dorset Council, who will reflect on the vital contribution of the Merchant Navy to the nation's prosperity, security and way of life, and pay tribute to the courage, dedication and sacrifice of Merchant Navy personnel, both past and present. 

Following the Chair's address, the Red Ensign will be raised in recognition of the invaluable service and commitment of the Merchant Navy. 

Addresses will be given by HM Lord-Lieutenant’s representative, former First Sea Lord Admiral Sir George Zambellas GCB DSC DL followed by Captain David Knight JP on behalf of the Merchant Navy. Captain David Knight JP will also lay a wreath in remembrance of those Merchant Navy personnel who lost their lives in service.  A one-minute silence will follow. 

The ceremony will be attended by representatives of the Weymouth, Portland & District Merchant Navy Association, the Dorchester Royal Naval Association, and Sea Cadets from Bournemouth and Weymouth. Dignitaries in attendance will include the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester, the Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth, and the Mayor of Portland. 

Cllr Stella Jones MBE said “Merchant Navy Day is an important opportunity to recognise and thank the men and women of the Merchant Navy, whose dedication, professionalism and sacrifice have played a vital role in supporting our nation's prosperity, security and way of life. We remember with gratitude those who served in times of conflict and peace, particularly those who gave their lives in service.  

Raising the Red Ensign is a proud tradition and a visible reminder of the Merchant Navy's enduring contribution to our communities, our economy and our country. I encourage residents to join us as we pay tribute to Merchant Navy personnel, past and present.” 

To further commemorate Merchant Navy Day, the Red Ensign will be flown above County Hall throughout the day. Members of the public are warmly invited to attend and join the council in recognising the significant contribution made by the Merchant Navy to the UK and beyond.
