Celebrating 60 years of outdoor education in Weymouth

Dorset Council councillors and Dorset Council's Director for Children's Services, Theresa Leavy, celebrate the 60th anniversary of Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre

On Monday 29 July 2024, Dorset Council marked the 60th anniversary of Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC) with a fun-filled open day.

Several hundred members of the public, current and former employees, and elected councillors, joined in the fun to celebrate 60 years of outdoor education for local children, young people, and families in the Dorset Council area.

Attendees were invited to try adventurous activities, like archery and rock climbing, and were given the chance to explore the centre’s indoor caving tunnels and soft play room.

Many of the children were trying these exciting activities for the very first time, with the help and assistance of the centre’s experienced instructors. Even Dorset Council elected members, Cllr Stella Jones, and Cllr Jon Orrell, gave the Portland Stone outdoor climbing tower a go and reached new heights.

The day was an enormous success and highlighted the wide range of activities that the Weymouth-based centre has to offer children and adults alike.

The centre offers a mix of activities for children, adults, local schools, and organisations and is also a key provider of activities for children as part of Dorset Council’s Holiday, Activities and Food Programme (HAF).

Cllr Clare Sutton, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said, “Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre is a brilliant asset and one that we hope people will continue to use and enjoy for many years to come.

“The activities on offer allow adults and children to build their confidence and embrace adventure and the outdoors, whether that’s on land or on the water.

“Along with adventurous activities, there are also quiet spaces in the gardens and a sensory room to explore, as well as a soft play room for younger children to enjoy. Visit the website to see the full list of activities and facilities that the centre has to offer.”
