For the fourth year in a row, Dorset Council, Barclays Digital Eagles and BCP Council are hosting a coding event to inspire future generations.

Dorset Coding Week will take place from the 6 to 10 October 2025 and is open to students aged 9 to 12 years.

This year, the event introduces a new STEM mascot, Boter the Axolotl. Designed by children for children, Boter was created by the winners of last year's ‘design a mascot’ competition - Stourfield Junior School in Bournemouth.

Cllr Richard Biggs, Dorset Council’s cabinet member for property, assets and economic growth, said: "We are really pleased to offer Dorset Coding Week to schools across the county for a fourth year.

“For our economy to grow in the future, we need to inspire young children about the opportunities available to them in digital industries right here in Dorset.

“But not only that, we want to get school children excited about coding, which is everywhere in many different forms, which some children may find surprising.

“It's crucial that we encourage both boys and girls to explore coding and STEM subjects, breaking down gender barriers and fostering inclusivity in tech."

Starting early with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) education is important for getting children, especially girls, excited about these subjects. Research shows that girls are often turned off to STEM from an early age due to societal biases and lack of representation.

Dorset Coding Week aims to change how children see coding by making it fun and accessible, sparking curiosity and excitement in all participants.

The event combines interactive classroom activities provided by Barclays Digital Eagles with classroom support and talks from a team of Dorset tech volunteers, helping students to develop coding skills while learning about the world of work.

STEM education prepares students for well-paid careers and a rapidly changing job market. It fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills and digital literacy, which are crucial for success in today's tech driven world.

Dorset Coding Week is open to schools and children who are in a home school setting.
