People travelling between Dorchester and Maiden Newton are being advised of highway improvement works planned for the A37 this autumn.

Dorset Council plans to carry out the work between 19 October and 27 November 2026. The improvements will make it safer and easier for people to cross the road and travel through the area on foot or by bike.

The crossing is on a well-used route between Dorchester and Maiden Newton. Recent improvements to nearby sections mean more people are expected to use the route in future, making it important that the crossing at Higher Wrackleford is safe, accessible and easy to use.

A lane closure will be in place on the A37 while the work is carried out. School Lane will also be closed for the duration of the scheme, although access will be maintained for school buses.

The works will:

  • remove pedestrian barriers in the middle of the crossing and create more space for people crossing the road
  • install tactile paving to help people with visual impairments
  • widen footways near the crossing and bus stop
  • improve footway surfaces outside nearby properties
  • improve visibility for people crossing the A37
  • make changes to the School Lane junction to help reduce vehicle speeds and shorten crossing distances
  • resurface parts of the road and refresh road markings
  • replace signs in the area

The improvements will address existing issues at the crossing, including limited space for larger cycles and pushchairs, reduced visibility and features that can make crossing the road more difficult.

Cllr Jack Jeanes, Dorset Council's Cabinet Member for Place Services, said:

"These improvements will make the crossing at Higher Wrackleford safer and easier to use for everyone.

"We know the temporary lane closure on the A37 and the closure of School Lane will cause some disruption, and we would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while the work takes place.

"Once complete, the improvements will provide a safer crossing, better footways and improved visibility, helping people move around the area more easily and safely."

More information about the scheme and traffic management arrangements will be available on the Dorset Council website.
