Dorset Council has officially turned the page on a new era of library access. On Friday 12 September, Sturminster Newton Library became the latest location to launch Extended Access, a cutting-edge initiative that opens the doors to library services beyond traditional staffed hours.

The launch event welcomed councillors, library staff, and enthusiastic users, all eager to see the new system in action. Attendees were treated to a live demonstration showcasing how the technology works—making it easier than ever to borrow books, return items, use free Wi-Fi and computers, or even hire rooms for community events.

Thanks to this forward-thinking upgrade, library members can now enjoy access Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm, regardless of whether staff are present. And with 18 hours of weekly staffed support still available, users get the best of both worlds: flexibility and personal service.

Cllr Ryan Hope, Portfolio Holder for Customer, Culture and Community Engagement, shared his enthusiasm:

“We’re thrilled to introduce this innovative technology to Sturminster Newton Library—the second in Dorset to benefit from this modern way of operating.
Any library member aged 16 or over can upgrade to Extended Access membership, allowing them to enter the library using their card and enjoy services outside regular hours.

We’re confident this expansion will be a game-changer for residents.”

Extended Access is more than just a convenience—it’s a commitment to keeping libraries at the heart of Dorset’s communities, empowering people with greater freedom to learn, connect, and create.

Verwood Library was the first in Dorset to offer ‘Extended Access’ followed by Sturminster Newton Library.

Next in line is for the upgrade is Sherborne and Gillingham libraries who will both be offering the service later this year.
