The lowland heath habitat here at Avon Heath is incredibly rare, with 86% of this special habitat lost from Britain in the last 200 years. This 235 hectare park is home to some of the rarest and most internationally important wildlife in the country including:

  • Sand lizards
  • Smooth snakes
  • Woodlarks
  • Dartford warblers
  • Silver-studded Blue butterflies

Avon Heath is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Protected Area and a Special Area of Conservation, meaning that the land here is protected by law for its rare wildlife. A small team of rangers, helped by our volunteers, work on site throughout the year to maintain this important habitat and conserve the wildlife that calls it home.
