Ridge and vale historic information

Mixed, but with regular enclosure tending to dominate in the higher areas, suggesting planned, relatively late enclosure of areas of former downland. Elsewhere there is a mixture of smaller-scale planned enclosure, with enclosure of strip fields in the vicinity of villages and farmsteads, and piecemeal enclosure, with numerous quite large areas of woodland often managed as coppice in historic times.

Known archaeology

Medieval farmsteads. May occupy sites of earlier farmsteads; which is a trend increasingly being borne out by the Historic Environment Register.
