Tree Preservation Orders (TPO) and conservation areas

Trees make a valuable contribution to both the urban and rural landscapes as well as being an important habitat for wild life and contributing to local amenity. Trees also help to counteract the effects of global warming. Large trees are particularly import providing important local landmarks.

The planning department is responsible for management of:

  • TPOs
  • processing applications to carry out work on TPO trees and trees within conservation areas
  • making site visits
  • giving advice
  • encouraging the retention of established trees
  • promoting new planting
  • protecting and enhancing the local landscape

There is no charge to the public for these services, nor for planning applications relating to trees.

The planning department is also responsible for high hedge enquiries under part 8 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003.

We have published a landscape and development guide as supplementary planning guidance and developers are encouraged to follow the advice that it contains when preparing planning applications.

Tree work notifications can be viewed on the tree work application searchContact us if you need help accessing this information.
