One of the key roles in the Hardy's Birthplace Project is that of the Outreach Ranger.

This new post in the West and North countryside team is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and is about working with groups marginalised by community to bring them into the 'Birthplace' environment so that they can be part of its future.  So far over 400 hours of volunteering have been achieved by adults with learning difficulties, people recovering from mental health issues or young people looking for a way forward.

Various groups have had guided walks and talks with a Hardy twist, been involved in landscape management tasks, such as coppicing, scrub control, planting and work in the orchard of the cottage. They have helped with dormouse nest boxes, bird feeders, and maintaining the log supply for the biomass burner which heats the new Visitor Centre at Thorncombe Wood.

Using the 'Hardy's Birthplace' surroundings, people can learn new skills, help with its management and get enthused and creative with their local environment.
