The construction of a replacement and expanded Wimborne First School.
The project and background
The former Wimborne First School was located in the town centre on School Lane. The accommodation was out dated, undersized, with restricted access, and limited for future expansion.
The provision of a new 3 form entry (FE) First School to the north of the town centre replaced the existing school. It also helps to accommodate an increase in pupil numbers generated by future housing developments, as proposed through the East Dorset Local Plan for the Wimborne area. It will meet the objective to relocate the existing school into the new school premises at Minster Gate.
The increased provision of a 3FE First School will meet the needs of the existing and newly incoming population, and the new school will be able to accommodate 450 pupils.
The school site is located 0.8 miles from the town centre of Wimborne Minster and lies just outside the settlement between Burts Hill and Cranborne Road, and will form part of a larger housing development proposed on both sides of the main road; B3078.
Construction of the Wimborne First School commenced in August 2018 by Galliford Try and was completed in late 2019.
