The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge is Read to the Beat

This summer, libraries across the UK will be buzzing with rhythm and imagination as The Reading Agency, in partnership with libraries, launch the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge: Read to the Beat - an exciting fusion of stories and music designed to engage children aged 4 to 12 in reading for pleasure.  Read to the Beat will feature artwork from award-winning illustrator Harry Woodgate, whose stunning illustrations will bring the Read to the Beat theme to life.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a key moment in the National Year of Reading.

Read to the Beat invites children to explore the connection between storytelling, rhythm and creative expression.

Families can expect:

  • special events and interactive experiences showcasing how music can spark imagination
  • inspiring book displays covering a mix of picture books, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and graphic novels aligned with the musical theme
  • digital activities, games and competitions through the Summer Reading Challenge website

Further information will be coming out soon.
