Safe moving and handling matters because:

  • moving and lifting your child can be hard on your body
  • doing it often can cause back pain, sore muscles, and tiredness
  • planning ahead helps keep everyone safe

Think about your space

To safely transfer your child, you should:

  • keep rooms clear of clutter
  • move furniture so there is space to walk and turn
  • put items your child needs within easy reach

Plan before you move

To make the lift or a move a smooth transition, it's important to:

  • know where you are going and what you need
  • tell your child what will happen
  • remove anything that could trip you

Lift safely

To lift safely, you should:

  • bend your knees, not your back
  • keep your back straight
  • hold your child close to your body
  • not twist; instead, turn your whole body
Warning If you feel pain, stop and seek medical advice.

You are important too! Look after yourself and take breaks if you do lots of lifting.

Use help and equipment

Equipment is provided to keep you, family, carers, and your child (ren) safe. Use equipment such as:

  • hoists
  • slings
  • wheelchairs (check brakes on wheelchairs and beds before moving)

Know the risks

This is important because:

  • lifting often can cause long-term back problems
  • tired muscles make accidents more likely
  • planning and using equipment reduce these risks

Good communication

It is important to:

  • talk to your child during moves
  • share tips with family and carers
