Cluster 7
At the first Community Conversation, held on 19 August at West Parley Hub, participants from the voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations, town and parish councils, health partners, Dorset Council and elected members discussed a range of issues and opportunities for the local area.
Several themes and insights emerged from these discussions, helping to shape a second, more focused discussion about priorities and future actions, which took place on Tuesday 22 September at The Centre in Ferndown.
Loneliness and social isolation
Partners value community spirit and local pride but highlighted loneliness and social isolation as ongoing challenges, particularly for older residents. Volunteering and community-based activities are seen as important ways to build social connections and wellbeing.
Local decision-making
People want greater involvement in decisions that affect their communities and a clearer understanding of how those decisions are made. There was a strong preference for accessible engagement that reaches people directly, alongside transparent communication, visible accountability and feedback that demonstrates how local views have influenced outcomes.
Clear and joined-up local support
Residents highlighted difficulties accessing and navigating services, including health, social care and community support, and often felt unsure where to go for help. There was a strong desire for organisations to work more closely together, making services easier to access, reducing duplication and providing a more coordinated experience for residents.
Housing and financial pressures
Affordable housing remains a major concern, particularly for younger residents and families seeking to remain in the area. Participants also highlighted hidden poverty, homelessness and wider cost-of-living pressures affecting vulnerable households.
Transport and rurality
Limited and infrequent public transport was identified as the most significant barrier to accessing healthcare, employment, shopping and social activities. Rural communities highlighted difficulties attending appointments, travelling independently and accessing services without relying on taxis or private vehicles.
Devolution of services and assets
Communities want greater opportunities to lead local solutions, making better use of community assets such as libraries, hubs and local organisations. To achieve this, residents and partners highlighted the need for sustainable funding, simpler processes, practical support and stronger connections, with Dorset Council acting as an enabler and facilitator of community-led action.
Young people and opportunities
Participants called for greater investment in youth provision, including activities, facilities, mental health support and opportunities for young people. Concerns were also raised about an ageing volunteer base and maintaining community capacity in the future.
