From 1 April 2019, a new unitary Dorset Council was created which covers the areas/services of Purbeck, East Dorset, North Dorset, West Dorset and Weymouth & Portland, plus the services previously provided in these areas by Dorset County Council. Therefore, Dorset County Council, East Dorset District Council, North Dorset District Council, Purbeck District Council, West Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council no longer exist.

Over the coming months, the Transparency Code items will be collated into single Dorset Council datasets, but initially some items will continue to be published by the previous geographical areas.

Our policies

All local authorities need a framework of policies to cover the different aspects of their work. Some of these are required by law. Others are driven by local priorities. All of the councils that merged together to create the new Dorset Council on 1 April 2019 had a large number of existing policies. 

As part of the legislation that brought the new council into existence, the Government gave us 24 months after 1 April 2019 to review and harmonise nearly all of our policies. This means that, for now, most of the policies from the six sovereign councils remain in force for the new council – during this period, there will be a number of cases where different policies relate to different parts of the council area. By 31 March 2021, all of these will have been replaced with single policies for the whole Dorset Council area – apart from Local Plans, which can remain in place for five years.
