In Dorset, public paths and public rights of way extend to around 3000 miles. Along with open green space, these provide an important network for:
- public recreation
- travel and health
- wildlife
- attracting visitors that help to boost our local economy
The Dorset Local Access Forum (DLAF) advise decision-making organisations (e.g. local authorities), about improvements to make to public access for outdoor recreation and sustainable travel across the county. This encompasses the Dorset and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) local authority areas. The DLAF also engages with neighbouring authorities in Devon, Somerset, Hampshire and Wiltshire for cross-boundary matters.
The DLAF focuses on all access issues relevant to the county as well as those debated nationally.
A range of local interests are considered including:
- Public Rights of Way and open spaces
- access user groups (walking, cycling, horse carriage driving, 4x4 use)
- accessibility for those with disabilities
- young people
- farmers
- forestry
- conservation
- public health
- tourism
- public transport
Local Access Forums are statutory, independent bodies established under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW 2000). The DLAF is administratively hosted by Dorset Council but remains an independent body.
