Housing options
Ukrainian guests who have come to Dorset through the Homes for Ukraine scheme are staying with sponsors in their home for a minimum of six months.
Some sponsors may be happy to continue providing a home after six months while others may ask their guests to find another place to live. We ask sponsors to try to give their guests at least two months' notice if they can no longer provide a home at the end of the six months. We also ask that sponsors notify the council by emailing ukraineresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk.
Please see below the different situations and the steps to be taken to address each one.
Sponsors
Nothing needs to be done as the current arrangement can continue and the host will continue to receive the thank you payments. For months 7-12 there is an additional payment of £250 per month.
Please advise the Homes for Ukraine team on ukraineresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk
The team can check the new sponsor is already registered and all checks have been completed. If it is a new sponsor, they will need to register. The team can then initiate checks prior to placement.
The guest may decide they prefer to find their own home in the private rented sector. The sponsor should advise ukraineresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk of this change and the new address. Help for moving into private rented accommodation is available from the Housing Advice team. Contact them at housinghelp@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk.
If a guest finds themselves needing support urgently as their home placement has broken down they should email ukraineresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk.
The sponsor should email ukraineresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk so the team can help the guest consider their options for the future. The sponsor should also make sure that the guest understands the hosting arrangement is coming to an end.
Visit the Homechoice website for qualifying conditions and how to join the register. If the guest qualifies, they can bid to rent homes from housing associations, as well as low-cost home ownership properties.
There is a high demand for social housing across the whole of England and in Dorset. There is a long wait, so we cannot provide housing immediately.
The sponsor should email ukraineresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk The Homes for Ukraine team will call on those who have expressed an interest on the Government's system to see if they can find a sponsor who can provide a home. If they cannot, they will help support the guest to find alternative accommodation.
