Coronavirus (COVID-19): updates and advice.

Dorchester Transport and Environment Plan - DTEP

The project aims to enhance the environment of Dorchester by implementing a series of traffic management measures to re-distribute traffic in the town. Although the scheme will not increase the capacity of the roads in the town, the improvements should help improve traffic flow.

Following the scaling back of DTEP in 2014, the scheme will now deliver the elements that include the deferred maintenance and improvement works, plus some environmental enhancements, but not the one-way traffic in the High Street.

Scheme objectives

DTEP objectives are:

  • support the economic prosperity of the town

  • provide a higher quality environment

  • protect and enhance the historic fabric of the town

  • reduce traffic speeds

  • improve access for pedestrians, cyclists, the elderly and disabled

  • maintain vehicular access for emergency, servicing and public transport

  • provide accessible car parking for shoppers, residents and other essential users

Maintenance and improvement works

Maumbury Cross and link road - scheduled for 2019

This scheme comprises the provision of a central refuge and controlled crossing on Maumbury Road (West) improving access for cyclists, pedestrians, the elderly and disabled to the market and town centre.

The scheme also involves the complete replacement of the existing obsolete traffic signal equipment at the junction. The refurbished signals would be to modern specification with low voltage LED lamps offering improved safety and lower running costs.

Damers Road junction with Williams Avenue

This scheme is currently delayed due to issues with land acquisition.

The scheme aims to improve traffic flow on the westbound approach to the junction and reduce the chance of tailbacks into the Great Western Cross junction.

Works completed

Improvement works have concluded at:

  • Top o' Town Roundabout
  • Great Western Cross
  • South Gate
  • Lower South Street
  • Upper South Street
  • High Street junction with Trinity Street
